Eleven House: How to Make a DIY Debris Chute From Kitchen Drawers

The plaster removal process at Eleven House was a pretty big project! I blogged about it here, and as promised I want to show you how we constructed a debris chute from drawers. The drawers in the downstairs kitchen at Eleven House were destined for the dumpster – until Bill Spaid had a brilliant idea and sidelined them for this project. Bill removed one end of the drawers and notched the edges so all the drawers fit together (reducing the possibility of trash getting caught along the way.) He then fit them together…

Eleven House: Out of the Dust! Old House Deconstruction

When you start to work on an old house, interesting things begin to happen. From the moment we repaired the locked front door and began using it as our entrance instead of the steep back stairway to the second floor, we could feel a change. It was as if Eleven House picked its head up and took a deep breath, and started living again. This past week, the local waste management company brought in a huge dumpster. Eleven House: Old House Attic Finds

You never know what you might find in a 125-year-old attic! We are continuing slow and steady work on the Eleven House. Bill Spaid and I decided that it was silly to work ourselves to the point of soreness and exhaustion; we’re too wise for that! So we’re going with the flow of the day and setting our sights for a few hours of work each day, in between our regular jobs and other responsibilities. It felt good to actually get some plaster off: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keMJRxjbefo We took some time to get…

Eleven House: Permits and Cash Back!

We finally got the official okey-dokey on the house! Our permits of many colors are taped to the front window of Eleven! City inspectors and state fire marshals had to check out the house before we changed anything. Everything has to be approved. The inspectors check out the floor plans, inspect plans for repairs, and discuss any changes.  Once they are satisfied, they sign off on the application and we display our permits in the front window. Engage! So our first deconstruction project was to start cleaning out the basement. Our…

Cash Crone: The Year of the Fixer-Upper.

We named the fixer-upper house! The Eleven House. I realized that each time I spoke of the house I called it Eleven (its house number). After a week of trying out new names I kept going back to it. In numerology, the number 11 represents the spiritual messenger, and is a master number. It is also considered a symbol of rebellion. Well, taking on this fixer-upper project could be considered a rebellion! Eleven House Now that spring is peeking in a little, we can spend a few hours at the fixer-upper house…
